Telluride Film Festival History
The Telluride Film Festival was first held on August 30, 1974, at the historic Sheridan Opera House. Founded by Bill and Stella Pence, Tom Luddy, and James Card of the Eastman-Kodak Film Preserve, the festival is operated by the National Film Preserve.
Over time, it has expanded beyond the Opera House to include outdoor venues and additional theatres, offering a unique cinematic experience in the Colorado mountains.
Unlike most film festivals, Telluride keeps its lineup a mystery until opening day, heightening anticipation among cinephiles, critics, and filmmakers alike. Each year the festival showcases around 20 feature-length films alongside shorts, student projects, rediscovered classics, and silent films.
With an average attendance of 5,000 guests, Telluride has earned a reputation as a launchpad for fresh talent and future Academy Award winners – directors like Jim Jarmusch and Michael Moore debuted here, where film such as Slumdog Millionaire (2008) first screened at Telluride before winning the Oscar for Best Picture.
Telluride Film Festival Screening Time & Date
In the weeks leading up to the festival, the Town of Mountain Village hosts Village Film Nights, a free outdoor screening series at the Conference Center. Doors open at 6:30 PM, with films starting at 7 PM.
