1. Filmfare Awards

This is one of the most popular awards in Indian Cinema, which has been around for much longer than most other award ceremonies. It was started in 1954 by the Times Group.

It was formerly called Clare Awards, after then the editor of the Times of India, Clare Mendonca, and it is also considered one of the oldest film awards in Indian cinema, where the general public and expert committees decide the winners of this award.

2. Dadasaheb Phalke Award

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest award in the field of cinema. It is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals, an organization set up by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting

The recipient is honored for their “great and outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema”, and is selected by a committee consisting of eminent personalities from the Indian film industry. 

The award comprises a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of ₹1,000,000 (US$13,000).

3. Zee Cine Award

Zee Cine Award is owned by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited and was started in 1998. This award was held for several years in Mumbai until 2004, when it took place in Dubai, UAE. Over the years, it has been hosted in cities like London, Mauritius, Malaysia, Singapore, and Macau.

This award was not held in 2009, 2010, and 2015, but recently, it was scheduled to be held this year in Mumbai. This award is given separately for jury’s choice and viewer’s choice. Now it is become an international event.

4. International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA)

The International Indian Film Academy Awards, popularly known as IIFA, is an annual awards ceremony for Indian movies. Produced by Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt, Ltd, the award winners are chosen by fans who vote online for their actors from the Indian film industry.

Established in 2000, the ceremony is hosted in different countries around the world each year. These awards honour films from the previous calendar year. Salman Khan has been the Brand Ambassador of the IIFA since its inception in 2000.

Five special awards were introduced: Star of the Decade (male and female) Movie of the Decade, Music of the Decade, and Director of the Decade.

5. National Film Award

As like the Filfare Awards, National Film Award was begun in 1954. However, like the other most of the awards it was organized by the Indian government. Held annually in New Delhi and winners were chosen by the government appointed panel and the awards were presented by the President of india.

Following the ceremony, the National Film Festival takes place where award-winning films are screened for public viewing. While filmmakers give their all to make a great story come to life on screen, cinema would be nothing without other evolving technologies like sound and image.
